Some people talk because they have air in their lungs.  While they may cast themselves as great communicators they are really just dropping the ball.  Speaking for the sake of speaking means that you are speaking with no purpose.

To illustrate this point I will reach into the land of economics.  One of the most important theories in economics is the law of diminishing returns.  This law states that:

“when equal quantities of one variable factor are increased (your words), while others remain constant (the environment/your audience),  a point is reached where the addition of more of the variable unit will result in a diminishing rate of return and productivity (your message) will suffer”

While this is an economic principle it applies to many aspects of our lives.  Think about your life for one moment.

  1. When you are craving a certain flavor of ice cream is the 30th bite as satisfying as the 4th?
  2. When you buy a new car which drive is the most exhilarating and memorable?  The time that you drive away from the lot or the 500th time that you start your vehicle.

The law of diminishing returns is at work in both of these scenarios.  When it comes to your message and your words ask yourself this question.

Do you want to be the 5th bite of ice cream or the 50th?

Think long and hard about it, the effectiveness and precision of your message is determined by how you answer.
